Remnant Conglomerate

Work In Progress

“We left our world in its death throwes some thirty years ago to this place [Ereshkigal], as a desperate means of finding someplace safe from the greed and avarice and corruption of the old world, a place for a potential new start should the unthinkable happen. Now, look at us, a totally self-sustaining nation with our own history, struggles, victories, and accomplishments. We are an entity composed of many peoples, many races brought together under one single cause; No matter the distance even across the unknown we are united, and we will continue to strive for excellence and stability even in this dark world where the sun never truly touches us. But mark my words our struggles have only just started. We will rebuild, and far better than before. We will find all those who entrusted their lives to us and were lost amongst the stars.

To all those who died in our service, we stand by what you stood for; Love and War!”

-Councilwoman 'Dread Persephone'

Origins

The Conglomerate hails from a world now departed; Its name now a taboo to speak aloud due to the complex array of emotions it elicits from members of Babel. These emotions range from sorrow from those who left everything and experienced the loss of their world in the case of Babel's civilian populace, to rage in the case of its armed forces; Having fought tooth and nail for over a decade and lost not only comrades and arms but having lost the fight for their home.

The history of Babel is vague to most due to the volatile events and political climate of their world but is widely agreed by its people to begin with the emergence of the most important figure in their known history; The lady Ishtar.

Ishtar; An influential figure both politically and otherwise, rose to power in the middling years of what was considered the ‘Death Throes’ of their world. With funds and connections unknown in their origins Ishtar and a small group of close confidants established ‘Babel Technology Solutions, a small-scale R&D group with grand aspirations towards world salvation through quality of life improvements.

BTS rose quickly in the world over the years by providing stop-gap solutions to many of the world's burgeoning problems. For food shortages and dying crops, they introduced ingeniously efficient hydroponic systems that could feed millions while taking up fractions of space compared to farmland.

For diseases and sickness from quickly failing antibiotics, they introduced advanced detection and treatment programs even the poorest could afford without worry.

For increased tensions the world over by its governments, they distributed technologies equally across the world to improve the lives of their peoples and ease social strain, while offering little ability to retrofit or militarize their tech and ensuring dependence on BTS.

For several decades what was once a world on the verge of a final and inevitable war with itself had begun to ease. So great was the rise of Babel that by the end of its first decade it had absorbed or bought out a majority of its world power bases in the fields of science, technology, medicine, infrastructure, agriculture, and many more.

With an abundance of resources and practically an entire continent to its name, Babel had quickly established itself as a world power without equal and began the next phase of Lady Ishtars plans towards salvation.

With funding of not only its own but from many governments around the world, BTS began the laborious construction of the world's first space elevator that would be labeled at its concept the Tower Of Babel.

With the help of technology and minds decades ahead of anyone else in the world Babel was able to finish the ‘Tower Of Babel’ in less than a decade; Using resources and manufacturing in space by manned vessels and space stations to perform most of the labor.

The towers unveiling and subsequent years were a golden age for Babel and the world at large until the very same governments BTS once aided and helped stabilize and save became jealous and covetous and made maneuvers against BTS to seize the tower for their own means.

Unable to force Babel to relinquish possession of the tower to any singular or group of world powers, an event transpired that would ultimately lead to the end of their world as they knew it.

One of the larger powers of the world, under a falsified pretense, began an invasion of Babel's territory with overwhelming military might to seize and occupy the tower.

The act was widely condemned by smaller and larger world powers alike who sought the tower for themselves and who feared the first nation being able to seize the tower first, a domino effect of declarations and actions alike saw the world at large converging its militaries towards the tower under the pretense of stopping each other from acquiring it.

While a world war raged on its own soil against one another, Babel deployed its own defense forces; With weapons and technologies decades ahead of all others, to block all attempts on their tower while in secret and beyond prying eyes an even greater project was in the works.

When the first colony ship, built on the dark side of one of the planets' moons docked with the tower, the world threw itself into chaos. The ship, the first of many, was intended to be a gift to the world and a means to begin colonizing their system and beyond by all peoples.

The war turned from a tedious dance of fighting amongst themselves with Babel in the background to full-scale conflict with all sides maliciously attacking each other to be the first ones to seize the tower and engaging Babels' security forces without needing provocation.

The resulting ‘war’ lasted for ten long years and pushed the powers of the world and babel to the limit. The final battle was fought against the remnants of military warbands, some with no homeland left but a scorched series of craters, and the last fragments of Babel's security forces occupying the tower and surrounding city.

Its populace and workforce long since loaded onto ships and thrown into the far reaches of space, Babel held the line for one final ship docked to the elevator. When all was said and done and the last survivors able to reach the tower boarded, the warbands below could finally settle the matter amongst themselves for a prize that cost them billions of lives.

It is controversial if it was the Admiralty of the Babel Security Forces, or the Lady Ishtar (A figure who had long since secluded herself from the public eye at the start of the war) was said to have given the order for a fission bomb to be sent down the tower; Detonating halfway down and sending the entire elevator crashing down upon their world and crippling what few world powers remained.

Without looking back, Babels' final colony ship (Said to hold not only the remains of their military forces but also the Lady Ishtar herself and the last board members to have been evacuated) followed the footsteps of the ships that went before and traveled into the stars.

Almost thirty years later the final colony ship would arrive, alone, in a foreign system and above a black gem of a world with three moons, that one of the board of directors leaders declared the lady Ishtar herself claimed forebodingly that it was “Prepared just for them”.

Fearing the worst when none of the other colony ships could be found they began waking the most important personnel to begin the process of settling their new world.

Government

The governance system of the conglomerate is balanced between two groups under Lady Ishtar who has since removed herself from most administrative actions with the exception of only the direst of circumstances; Leaving the leadership of her people widely to her military and directive groups.

Under the lady there are two main, and one unofficial power bases that control the Conglomerate; The Babel Armed Military Force - 'BAMF' and the 'Board' as the official leadership of the Conglomerate, and the Cult of the lady as a growing power base.

The Board

The board of directors, also known simply as 'The Board' is a group of formerly twelve individuals selected by the lady herself to administrate BTS upon its formation, and later adhere to the running of the Conglomerates leadership needs.

Each seat on the council has traditionally been governed as an aspect of the Conglomerate's life ranging from agriculture to medicine and health, to education, to sciences, etc.

As a whole, the board votes on important matters.

As of the settling of Ereshkigal, however, the board was discovered to have fractured as some of the board members on the earliest colony ships turned against the lady and the conglomerate and have created their own separate faction within the Conglomerate attempting to seize control.

While the board is fractious and not united it still serves as the governing body of babel and the conglomerate; With both sides seeking advantages over the other to form advantageous policies. Due to the lack of a Lord Admiral, the loyalist side of the board holds a military advantage and has control over the veteran and well-trained BAMF, while the separatist members have formed a more militia-like force known as the Colonial Guard.

While both sides vie for power, the civil war is largely bloodless and often instead acts as both sides clashing over resources, aiming to suppress the other with majority control over military assets like warships, and the holding of resources. While actual battles that endanger the populace are rare.

The only times the two sides ever truly come to armed blows in force are over the discovery of any lost colony ships which would add an influx of millions of bodies, military assets, supplies, and the resource-laden colony ships; As well as over any xenotech such as alien technology, ships, weapons, resources, FTL drives, etc.

Board Members

The current board is split between loyalist members on the side of Lady Ishtar, and separatist members who stand on the side of Dread Persephone. And while the two sides of the Board are largely at war with each other they both belong to the same entity and seek to keep the Conglomerate whole.

As such, they wage a shadow war between themselves with loyalist and separatist forces and seek to build and maintain resources ranging from food and precious materials to war materials like ships and men. Currently, the Separatists hold a majority of members and resources but are lacking the military advantage that the Loyalist members hold.

Once lost Board members are often found amongst lost colony ships and are prized by both sides of the board to sway their power and favor.

Loyalist

The loyalist members of the board seek to maintain the status quo and reunite the Conglomerate back under the Lady Ishtar and usher a new and peaceful age for babel.

  • Rodrigo Samuel De Santiago - Agriculture
  • Bacchus Huron Greesus -
Seperatist

The Separatist members of the board seek to retire Lady Ishtar from her position as head of the board and install Dread Persephone as the new lead chair over the board. While none of them overtly seek to harm or cause harm to the Lady Ishtar, it is unitedly believed by all of them that her retirement is long overdue and that the reings of Babel should fall to their guiding hands.

Lord Admirals Council

The other side of the coin from the board is BAMF's 'Lord Admirals Council' which is made up of the upper-echelon of the BAMF military. The Lord Admiral and his subordinate Admirals are not part of the Board of Directors; But act independently and only answer to the whims of the board on a majority vote. Otherwise, the LAC act independently and towards the security of Babel and may do so short of declaring war.

The LAC admirals have the right to commandeer resources, assets, labor, and stores from the populace without consulting the board in matters of defense. Allowing them to conscript citizen contracts into BAMF and/or the Colonial guard depending on the loyalty of the admiral.

The LAC, however, does not have the right to commandeer ships even in times of war, as they are the property of the babel and the Board to distribute or hold in surplus. And other than in times of war the amount of material, contracts, armor, weapons, etc. Are all controlled and distributed by the Board of Directors, Thus giving the board leverage to control the actions of BAMF and the LAC to ensure the LAC relies dependant on them and will never overtly be in a position to seize power should they ever see the council as a detriment to their goals or leadership.

(Develop this more later.)

Cult of The Lady

See here for more info

There are few religions where the Conglomerate came from with many having died off or faded into obscurity near the last days of their world.

Members of the Conglomerate however have a deity of their own. The Lady Ishtar is seen by most as an individual worthy of their respect and leadership by the majority of the Conglomeration to the point that to speak ill of, or even question her actions, is a social taboo in itself and is liable to incite an outburst if not violence.

Some, however, see the Lady as more than just a mortal and have elevated her as a being of worship in their eyes; Taking the reverence and respect of her actions into cult-like zealotry that borders on fanaticism. This ‘Cult of The Lady’ is the largest amongst the civilian population who were first uplifted and saved by BTS and the lady Ishtar.

This is where the 'cult' comes in. Where the lady is more than just revered; She is worshiped as a living god and savior of her people. The cult is a growing power in the Conglomerate and has gone from a secret organization to being openly backed by many in the masses to the point of zealotry.

It is taken as consent by the cult that Ishtar herself has not disavowed their worship.
