Glorinferosian

Work In Progress

Glorinferosians are a short-statured blood-drinking humanoid species with long tails and butterfly wings. They have a natural ability to use fire magic and extreme heat resistance. Sometimes they are called “Butterdemons” on account of their wings, vampiric nature, and usage of fire magic. Another nickname for them is “Glowies”, though some take offense to this term. They hail from the relatively isolated nation of Glorinferosa, but can be found throughout the sector.

Evolution/Creation

Glorinferosians adapted to the high temperatures of their home planet Infernia, evolving an extreme resistance to high temperatures and a natural understanding of basic fire magic. They evolved as the apex predators of Infernia. Eventually, travelers from another world introduced genes from other species into the population. These new Glorinferosians continued on as the apex predators of the planet before eventually establishing a civilization. Presumably, the progenitor species without altered genes went extinct as the Glorinferosians with traits from alien species lived on, however, it is rumored some of the original species may still be alive.

History

Originally being the top species on the planet, Glorinferosians established their dominance over other species long before establishing a civilization. This led to Glorinferosians often thinking of themselves as at the top; they did not know of a world where they were the hunted. After establishing civilizations, they began to soften, being protected within the comforts of technology and groups. At first, the civilization were split up, and they tested different types of governments. Before the Kingdom of Glorinferosa was established, it was not uncommon for Glorinferosians, both civilized and uncivilized, to be abducted by alien races for slavery, experimentation, even being kept as “pets”. Civilizations around Infernia merged under one absolute monarchy that encompassed the entire planet, the Kingdom of Glorinferosa. Once this kingdom was established, Glorinferosians were better protected against foreign invaders seeking to abduct them. Even after entering the space age, the nation of Glorinferosa remained relatively self-contained within their home system of Thermius and the other systems they would colonize (Femoria and Venaortio), but many Glorinferosians went on to disperse throughout the sector. This was aided by the other two systems being far away, causing Glorinferosians to spread out over a wider range.

Habitat and Population

Glorinferosians generally live in hot environments, it would be very rare to find one living in a cold area. Glorinferosians have spread out throughout the sector, however the greatest concentration of them can be found on their home planet Infernia in the Kingdom of Glorinferosa. Due to its location, there are also a large number of them living throughout the Great Flare. As Glorinferosa has colonies in the systems of Femoria and Venaortio, located in the Mori Expanse, many can be found there as well. Glorinferosians aren't found everywhere in the sector, but they're not an uncommon race.

Biology

Glorinferosians are extremely resistant to high temperatures, to the point where they are capable of walking through fire or wading through lava comfortably. In turn, they are more vulnerable to cold temperatures and more susceptible to getting hypothermia. Glorinferosians generally consider “average” temperatures for other species to be cold, but not uncomfortably so. They have an innate access to fire and thermal (but only heating) magic. While they are highly adept at learning heat-based magic, they have a very difficult time learning cold-based magic.

Anatomy and Physiology

The most prominent aspect of a Glorinferosian's body is their wings, having large butterfly or moth-like wings on their back that grant them flight. Moth types can fold their wings down to a much more compact size, but most butterfly types cannot do this. These wings are capable of changing color, and for butterfly types, glowing in the dark. Glorinferosians tend to leave a colorful dust behind on things their wings have been touching for a prolonged period of time due to a small amount of the tiny scales on their wings rubbing off. These scales grow back, and losing them only effects their ability to fly if they lose a very large amount of them. They can stick to and climb walls like a bug. They also have long tails, usually around 5 feet in length, covered in soft fur. They have sharp, retractable claws in their fingers and toes in place of nails. They have 2 antennae coming out of the top of their heads approximately 1 foot tall. They have a more acute sense of smell and hearing than most species. They have sharp fangs which they use to drink blood, and are capable of feeding off the blood of almost any species. They are humanoid in form, however their skin has a small amount of chitin in it. This chitin does not form distinct plates and is not visible to the naked eye, but it is present in their skin. They are capable of regenerating lost body parts, including limbs, as long as the injury is not fatal. On average, Glorinferosians range from 4 to 5 feet tall and weigh from 75 to 80 lbs, with no average difference between males and females. The tallest Glorinferosians do not even reach 6 feet in height. In general, there are not many differences between a male and a female Glorinferosian's body aside from their reproductive systems. A Glorinferosian's immune system has the unique ability to superheat their body to burn out pathogens, almost like a supercharged fever. Unlike a fever in another species, due to their bodies' extreme heat resistance, this does not cause damage to their own body.

It is possible to install cybernetics in a Glorinferosian, if their regenerative abilities are suppressed. However, it would be very difficult to design implants that are capable of the same heat resistance as their bodies. For this reason, giving a Glorinferosian cybernetics could compromise their heat resistance and ability to use fire magic due to damage to the implants.

Genetics

Genes in Glorinferosians are passed down through both parents. It should be noted, Glorinferosians appear to exhibit genetic similarities with other species, primarily humans, bats, and butterflies.

Life Cycle

Glorinferosians start out as eggs, before they hatch and enter the infant stage. It takes approximately 1 month for the mother to develop an egg before laying it. An egg will take 4-5 months to hatch. Development of the baby occurs inside the egg before it is laid, though a majority of development takes place after the egg is laid. Usually, only one egg is laid. Infants lack wings at first, they start to develop after about a year. It takes until they are about 5 years old for their wings to become developed enough for them to fly. Their antennae appear as stubs when they are 3 years old, and they remain short until adolescence. They rapidly grow to their full length in their teens. Their bodies slowly grow until they reach full height during their teens, they do not experience growth spurts. They have their tails from birth, and they gradually grow to their full length at about the same rate as their height growth. After reaching adulthood which starts at the end of their teenage years, their body does not change much. On average, a Glorinferosian will live up to 300 years. Glorinferosians who drink blood are known to live longer than those who do not.

Diet

The most common part of a Glorinferosian's diet is blood, having fangs with which to drink it from their prey. The next most likely thing for them to eat is meat, usually raw, but they are capable of eating plants as well. However, blood is their primary food source, and can come from many different species, including other Glorinferosians.

Biological Variation

All Glorinferosians share a number of key traits, such as wings, antennae, claws, and long cat-like tails with fur. Certain major traits can differ; some Glorinferosians have moth wings, which are capable of folding up and can still change color, but cannot glow unlike Glorinferosians with butterfly type wings. About half of all Glorinferosians have an additional pair of chitinous insect limbs on their sides, while the other half lacks them. The most common eye color is red, but it can differ. Glorinferosians can have a variety of different skin colors, including human-like tones of skin and more vibrant skin colors. Some Glorinferosians have patches of fur on their bodies, usually around the neck, and in rare instances can have a full coat of fur. Moth type Glorinferosians are much more likely to have fur on parts of their body than butterfly types. Antennae styles can differ, the most common styles to see are tall antennae that curl forward in a spiral and feathery moth-like antennae. Antennae are usually around the same height. In rare instances, Glorinferosians may have flaming body parts, such as their hair.

Psychology

Motivation and Emotion

Some Glorinferosians think of themselves as at the top as a result of their species having originally been an apex predator; this can lead to them underestimating threats. These ones may seek to prove their strength, and do not appreciate being thought of as weak. Others are more timid, not having carried over this mentality. Older Glorinferosians who came from a time before Glorinferosians “softened up” are more likely to be bold. Some of the fiercer ones get frustrated with meek Glorinferosians, believing they aren't tough enough. A vast majority of Glorinferosians prefer drinking blood. If they are hungry enough, their natural instincts start to kick in and compel them to drink blood from another person. This instinct gets stronger the hungrier they are, meaning a starving Glorinferosian will find it very difficult to resist biting someone else and drinking their blood. Though Glorinferosians do occasionally drink blood from other members of their species, their instincts will first prioritize driving them to drink the blood of another species before compelling them to drink blood from another Glorinferosian if they are hungry.

Sexuality and Love

Glorinferosians can be attracted both to other Glorinferosians and other species. Glorinferosian love is usually very genuine, issues such as forced marriages are rare. Attraction can vary widely between individuals, it can be based on a wide range of things such as appearances, behavior, and personality.

Culture

Language

Most Glorinferosians speak English, this most likely came from an alien race that visited the planet before. How well they speak English depends on where they are from; in some regions, Glorinferosian English is broken and often used incorrectly as a result of Glorinferosians having different interpretations of the language.

Naming

Glorinferosians have first names, but usually lack last names unless they were given to them by someone else. Due to a lack of last names, it's uncommon for multiple Glorinferosians in a given community to share first names. Also, some Glorinferosian names do imitate common names from other species, but they are usually spelled differently. Adi, Adria, Trilis, Avi, and Myrienne are all examples of Glorinferosian names.

The Arts

Glorinferosian art often looks very unusual to a species that's accustomed to walking on the ground. Glorinferosians will exploit their ability to climb walls and fly to the fullest in designs. Glorinferosian architecture, for instance, often incorporates upside-down or sideways furniture and doors that lead to an area with no floor below it. As a consequence, species that cannot fly or climb walls may not be able to navigate Glorinferosian buildings properly, or may not be able to navigate them at all. Despite a Glorinferosian's smaller stature, spacious rooms are usually incorporated in parts of a building to accommodate for indoor flight and their large wings. Most Glorinferosian dances include flying to some extent. Sculptures may have parts that require an individual to fly or climb to see them from a different perspective, and three-dimensional paintings or paintings on a three-dimensional surface are common.

Attire

Glorinferosians usually wear warm clothes as a result of being used to hot temperatures. Most Glorinferosians that have an additional pair of insect limbs will keep them covered and don't wear shirts with extra sleeves for them. Their wings can prove to be very inconvenient for putting on clothing, they require large, usually elastic or openable slits in the back of their clothes to accommodate them.

Religion

Most Glorinferosians have a respect for “The Ancestor” or “The Ancestors”, visitors from another planet who they believe gave their race genetic traits from different alien species. A smaller amount of Glorinferosians view them with disdain though, believing they “tainted” the species with “weaker” attributes.

Philosophy

Some Glorinferosians believe they should maintain a reputation as a fearsome species, but more are indifferent to this reputation. Most Glorinferosians believe it's important to learn for themselves and teach their children an advanced level of fire and thermal magic due to how widespread it is in Glorinferosian societies.

Society

Kinship

Glorinferosians form families with their biological kin and relatives. Adoption also occurs in Glorinferosian societies, but it is not uncommon for children who've lost their parents to be forced to fend for themselves. Siblings tend to have close relationships and deep bonds with each other.

Government and Politics

In Glorinferosa, the primary form of government is an absolute monarchy. Governments below the monarch usually have one leader in charge. The monarchy is hereditary, with the throne being passed down to a designated family member when the monarch dies. Several underground gangs exist, many of which are not content with the current ruler. These gangs are usually secretive, ruthless, and have no interest in abiding by the law. While Glorinferosa does technically control Femoria and Venaortio, these systems tend to be much more anarchic. They are very far away from Thermius, and as a result it is difficult for the monarchy to retain control over them. Femoria and Venaortio have governments under the monarch's authority to help maintain order, but they are weak and largely ineffective.

Conflict

Glorinferosians are not necessarily inherently aggressive, however, they are known to be very easy to tempt into drinking blood, to the point where they may attempt to drink it from someone else without permission. A hungry Glorinferosian may have difficulty resisting the urge to bite someone else to feed off their blood. They are less likely to drink blood from another Glorinferosian than from another species, but will still do so. Glorinferosians used to war amongst themselves frequently before the monarchy was established, however, after the kingdom was formed, official warring between Glorinferosians became much less common. The Kingdom of Glorinferosa is peaceful to most other nations, so long as they haven't done anything to provoke a war with Glorinferosa or wronged the Glorinferosians (such as the aliens who abducted them in the past). Glorinferosian gangs, on the other hand, still fight with each other often and anyone who crosses them. Conflict is rampant in Femoria and Venaortio due to the lack of an effective authority over them. In turn, a larger percentage of Glorinferosians found in the Mori Expanse can be considered hostile.
