Gates

Gates covers the massive FTL gates scattered across the Calliope Star Clusters' various subsectors, their use, transit hubs, utility, etc.

On a whole Gate travel is subject to one of two categories; Transit gate/hubs, and Terminal gate/hubs. Despite their size and simular nature, both gate types provide different types of transportation depending on the intended destination.

Terminal Gates

A terminal gate hub is a massive gate spanning upwards of almost a hundred kilometers at its widest point in a near-perfect but broken series of arms that look a lot like a massive ribcage that spans for over an entire megameter in length. The terminal gate is so massive that it is hypothetically invulnerable to any conventional harm, and there is no single space-faring entity that can not pass through it and not seem minuscule in size comparatively.

The point of a terminal gate is to act as a hub to cross between the various subsectors of the star cluster, and unlike their lesser transit gates are the only known method to traverse such great distances. The fact they can even connect to gates on the other side of Hadals Chasm is a continued mystery none have been able to solve as attempting to tamper with a gate is a quick way to get your ship torn apart down to its barest elements by the powerful fields and currents surrounding the gates that make passing anywhere but through it deadly.

Terminal gates also have a massive network of Transit gates connected to them in the subsector they reside in and act like a massive hub for which all the transit gates in a given subsector connect to and vice versa. As such it is common for a Terminal gate to become a massive lot for space stations, traveling bazaar barges, space hulks, spies and information peddlers, mercenaries, etc. and the like to converge and offer services to all the ships that pass through a Terminal hub and on their way to another transit hub or across the star cluster to another subsector all together. Terminal hubs can also deposit a ship up to several lightyears1) from its connected transit gates or another terminal gate.

It is surmised that Terminal gates once were used to even transport ships to other galaxies and universes by the Precursors, but if it was once possible then either the enigmatic gatekeepers themselves won't say or the other gates in such locations simply arent online.

Terminal gates may connect to each other or the transit gates connected to them. Transit gates may only connect to the nearest Terminal gate

Transit Gates

Much like a Terminal gate but much less grand in scale, a Transit gate consists of only one set of ribs and can connect only to the Terminal hub before needing to either connect from there to another transit gate or pass through to another subsector. The amount of Transit gates in any given subsector is unknown due to the nature of the gates only recently re-activating, but there are groups out there known to peddle such information such as the location of transit gates near intended destinations for a price.

Unlike Terminal gate hubs, transit gates are much less crowded and more often than not are abandoned or sparsely populated by a scattering of a smaller selection of the same services as a terminal hub. Transit gates have been subject to wannabee warlords in the past attempting to seize control of them for reasons such as monopolizing transit or forcing tolls or piracy upon travelers but are more often than not subject to swift retaliation by coalitions of free captains ousting them in great independent fleets as an example of restricting travel. The only successful attempt at monopolizing gate travel was done more economically than militarily and is currently being prosecuted by the Dreadfleet; Who operates a series of locations near a Terminal Hub and use their military might to evict or seize any upstarts.
