Chorus of Decay

The setting of the story is a colony that spreads across their chosen world, only to be destroyed from within, by influence from outside of their sphere. Through the influence of an outside entity, the colonization of the colony is put into overdrive at the cost of wide downstep in technology, and innumerable casualties. All that is left are ruins and ashes, and whatever crawls among them that the bombs and viruses have created. The story will follow around a group of survivors who are trying to make it by and survive in this new world, completely oblivious to what caused the downfall in the first place, but worried about what it left behind. Advanced technology is rare compared to the origin of the colony, and magic is stigmatized by biological agents released during the fall.

Background, race, gender, religion, and belief no longer matter. The only goal now is to survive, but the question remains, whether you will do it apart, or together. Take and salvage what you can, arm and armor yourselves, face the terrors of the wastes, and survive however you can. This plot will focus on the journey and day to day survival, as well as the grim dark and serious elements that come with a post apocalyptic setting. Death is possible, so write smartly, but have fun in playing the character as they deal with this world and the other survivors around them.

The GM for this plot is Jack Pine.

Story Summary

Factions

The various groups to emerge some time after the collapse.

The Iron Legion

Viewed as vigilante protectors by most, some use the title for more selfish, or greedy reasons. Behavior of each cell operates and acts somewhat differently, but those true to their mandate, are trying to do their best to help others through salvage made creations and gear. They hold onto anything high grade almost religiously, as well trying to keep them out of hands they deem unworthy by their views. Interactions with this group will be mixed depending on cell, and your standings with those in the area that could spread the word, however be wary if ever facing conflict with them.

Another facet that has been whispered about among wandering survivors, are the strange ways of some cells. Rumors of some members wielding divine blessings, as well as operating under more religious themed motivations. These are widely unconfirmed, and have created quite a number of strange stories, some painting legion members of knights blessed by the gods. This varies starkly with opposing stories that paint other members as ex-military, or similar militants who signed onto the organization. In either case, the Iron Legion is a largely unknown and unfamiliar group, so it is hard to pin just who they are in reality.

Militia

As the name suggests, civilian soldiers, mostly those assigned as security around camps and settlements. Their standing towards the cast is purely based on their standing with the settlement, group, or camp themselves. However, this does not mean that the militia does not have their own motivations. Also there will be independent groups of militia, likely combing for supplies, exploring areas, or trying to clear out threats. Deal with them cautiously, but trust them if you can, as they are very helpful and valued allies when proven friendly.

Military

Disorganized, and really only found in holdouts, but vary much more wildly then their civilian counterparts. They can either be helpful, or rogues who are abusing the equipment issued to take what they want from anyone they can. They are significant threats, and almost always well armed and equipped, but also a walking trove of valuable supplies as well as gear.

Survivors

Just people like you, and entirely unpredictable, so interact with extreme care. Whether they are your neighbor, or even your friend, be aware that they will always look out for themselves first most of the time. Those who focus on others, are either those who don’t last long, start camps/settlements, or have ulterior motives. You’ll encounter survivors anywhere, and in any situation imaginable, but are for the most part neutral parties unless desperate.

Infected

Once thought the stuff of fiction and media, mutants and those who seem to have ignored their own deaths, now roam in places that men no longer choose to walk. They are a great and numerous threat that wildly vary in species and type, if those classifications are even applicable. They have not shown to be reasonable, or amicable in any way, and will almost always be hostile.Their capabilities and tendencies, are still widely unknown, and should be avoided if possible. The only certainty is that the majority seem to roam in at least pairs, or even worst cases as packs.

Bandits and Raiders

About as simply put, those who take extreme measures for the survival of them and theirs. Whether it’s one or two, or even in some cases, whole groups. Dealing with any of them is a severe gamble, and carries whatever they can find, as well as being equally unpredictable. Some are just looking to get by with whatever it takes, some are taking much darker turns in method, and represent the worst in people when all society is gone.

The Coven

Those who followed more arcane tradition and teachings, have found the world corrupted, but slowly lessening in the presence of civilization. They are highly secretive, and dangerous in unknown ways, but know knowledge far more practical then were applicable within society. One thing for sure, magic touches everything they do and use, and in some cases entities far older. Tread their domains with utter care, and expectations for the unexpected, for they are surrounded by the macabre and morbid.

Others…

These are just some examples of some of the inhabitants of the wastes, but many others can be found. Opportunities and dangers can be found among them all, but all should be treated with wary attention, as well as respect to the impact they have in their areas.
