NDC Magic System

Summary

Schools of magic are the general fields that specific types of magic come from. These are related to general mechanics found in the universe, and the laws of physics, as the basic energies that these types of mana processes are empowered with to perform their function. Each school, regardless of element or universal mechanic, requires the associated energy to be present in sufficient amounts within the local environment. Otherwise, it will draw and convert from the mana found within the caster’s body, which is slower and not of the same potency.

The majority of the NDC population is unable to naturally cast magic without the assistance of certain systems, as they do not have the understanding of archaic formulas. Whereas those of bloodlines related to casters of ancient old, are more knowledgeable and have a more natural feel for how such formulas work. Therefore, their way of casting magic tends to be slower yet more potent. They have spent years studying tomes, and manuals recovered, or passed down from ancestors who carried the knowledge forward in its original translation.

Those who do not have the luxury of bloodlines are forced to use Digital Élan Focus(DEF); these devices have converted the archaic formula into code that, while not exact like the formula are, and therefore weaker spells, allow for the computer to complete the spell, allowing for the DEF to cast the spell at a much higher speed.

Schools of Magic

School of Life - Botanical/Vita

(Add more thoughtlines here.) Understanding that flora and fauna are the same, yet different, the School of Life focuses on the organic aspect of life, and that there is a difference between plant and animal functions. Both sides of this school, however, focus on the similarities in chemical processes and physics that allow life to flourish, the manipulation of those, and the exploitation of that manipulation for agriculture, medicine, and other applications.

School of Thermal - Pyro/Cryo;

Focusing on the magical application of heat energy, the School of Thermal teaches its students how the addition or removal of thermal energy allows for a variety of potent spells, creating powerful fires from heat, and the coldest spell from the lack of heat.

School of Astral - Solar/Gravitic

Centered almost entirely on the interaction between how the result of fusion struggles against gravity, the School of Astral delves into the radiation created by stars, into the concepts of mass manipulating other objects.

School of Light - Photon/Eclipse

Specializing on how energy forms light, the School of Light understands that the greatest and most prevalent form of light are photons, but also that photons can be manipulated to deprive an area of light. In this balance and with an attention to detail, scholars of the School of Light can produce powerful illusions ranging from readouts to powerful illusory traps, and augmentation of other weapons.

School of Unorthodox - Electro/Hydro

Developing the fields of magic that cannot be quite differentiated into a clear positive/negative spectrum, the School of Unorthodox concentrates on how energy is transferred between electrons, and how pure water is a good stopping force for such a transfer.

School of Kinetic - Dynamic/Stasis

Concentrated around the concept that everything has motion, the School of Kinetics teaches that heat can manipulate the micro-vibrations of an object, even to a point where it can be frozen still, or to the point where it can tear itself apart.

Programming

Digital Élan Focus (DEF) is the name created for the devices that most people in the NDC use to be able to cast magic. These are devices designed to translate archaic formulas into a more understandable language of sorts, commonly as software syntax codes, that can then be stringed together as programs for quick execution. This still requires that the caster have gone through the education process for learning a field of magic. But the device essentially does most of the work for the user, and taps into their body’s ability to process and draw mana, via what counts as their soul.

This is done by linking with the Geist system, that almost every citizen has, and is hardwired into their mind and body. With support from the Anima system as well, to use the Geist as a sort of window into the user’s soul. The device then processes and executes the translated code, and focuses the process through its Élan crystal, which then holographically projects the code for the spell.

Theory

The universal symbol for magic, 🝎, is the physical approximation of the value of magic that can be written on paper. It is the Golden Ratio of magic, the inherent difference that separates an archaic caster from a DEF caster, what those who are born with the ability can innately grasp, while computers can only approximate the true value of this symbol. It is similar to 𝝅 in regards to that the symbol itself cannot be translated into practical terms, and that programs can only approximate its true value. Those who do not have the ability that Archaic casters have cannot simply comprehend the true meaning of magic, but both the approximation and the symbol are suitable substitutions for spell programming and theorycrafting, respectively.
