Social Norms

  • Physical forms of communication are common above verbal. They talk with their bodies and actions, a fight breaking out in the middle of camp isn't uncommon, and seeing a pair fond of each other nibbling on one another is cute in the eyes of the Grunn.
  • “Negeto GoodHima” - A formal greeting, usually to a chief or high chiefsman.
  • Gift giving - To receive a gift from a Grunn family is held at the highest honor. The life style these people live is filled with hard work and labor, to take the time to sit down and make a gift for another family or person is consuming and could be considered a waste by some Grunn. The most common gift is a Wreath. It is very difficult to make and takes a lot of time and effort, so it is the most accepted. A family might be judged by how much they are loved by the nation by how many wreaths they have.

Leadership & social classes

  • Social Class; Chieftain

There are usually 3 chieftains at a time to take care of the concerns of the people. The do not take charge of any family groups but their own and are more like the 'judges' in civil disputes. They help other families when it is needed and make the hard decisions for the Grunn as a whole. They would decide if the nation as a whole will go to war but not who would go. Examples: Family wants compensation for the death of a family member from another tribe. The tribe wont pay because it wasn't their fault for his death. This matter would be taken to a Chieftain who will make an educated guess on what happened and choose the most justified path. A family is facing famine and has no food or grass to feed their live stock. The Chieftains take charge and bring the animals to their lands, and give the family what they need to survive until the famine subsides.

Warbands, a group that values the hunt travels great distances in pursuit of their game. Warbands were created as sort of roaming groups of fighters to offer aid or terrorize. Proper Warbands that are recognized by having taken part in pledging loyalty to protecting the Grunn people and way of life, are often seen patrolling borders and offering aid as needed. Warbands are lead by a single leader often referred to as simply Warlord/lady/lory (a gender neutral term) [their name] Read more…

Its supposed to be their first hunt alone, taking the parts of that animal and making clothes and tools from their remains. They must use every part of their first kill as part of the journey. They have till the last winter moon to complete this ritual. Once they have done this they can return to the community hub as a full adult.

  • Dance of the Heart Flame

In the middle of Winterfest all the married couples come together and make a giant bonfire in the middle of camp. Each partner picking out a stick of branch around the hub and bringing it to where the bonfire will be lit. Once both partners have picked a stick for themselves it will be tied together with a thin ribbon to symbolize their bond. After all the sticks have been brought and place into the circle the bonfire is lit and all the members of the community will dance around it. Once the sun has set the last dance of the night is given to all the bachelors and bachelorettes. The dance consists of two rings, one all females and the second all males.
