Work In Progress

Upon the world of Ama'Tsuin, where stars are believed to be the eyes of gods and the wind speaks in forgotten tongues, the Kitsune are known as a race of mystics, tricksters, and twilight-bound guardians. They are foxlike humanoids, beings of both physical grace and ancient, fey-touched soulcraft, born with a duality that sets them apart from all others: a mortal body, and a soul split between this realm and the Dreaming Veil.

Kitsune possess a striking blend of beauty and beast. Tall and elegant, they move with an effortless precision that hints at something more than mere flesh. Their fur ranges from ash-gray and silver to gold, crimson, or black, often glimmering faintly under starlight or moon. Slitted eyes glow softly, their hues changing with emotion or arcane use.

Each Kitsune is born with one tail, but may earn more through deeds, spiritual enlightenment, or magical prowess. The most revered Kitsune are the Nine-Tails, living legends considered the living bridges between the seen and unseen worlds.

Their voices carry an uncanny cadence, able to lull listeners into calm or frighten with a whisper. Some say a Kitsune can speak directly to your shadow.

History

Required. What events led the species to where they are today? A full history is not necessary, but please include enough to give players an idea of how their characters may have come into the universe.

Evolution/Creation

Optional. How did the species come to be? You can leave the header as Evolution/Creation or pick just one

Biology

Required section. You can leave this intro space blank, if you'd like.

Anatomy and Physiology

Required. Description of the layout of the species' body, how it works, general information about height, weight, etc.

Genetics

Optional. How do the genetics for this species work?

Life Cycle

The Kitsune are not born merely of flesh, but of flame, spirit, and memory. Their life cycle is deeply entwined with the Dreaming Veil—the metaphysical plane from which their souls are partially drawn—and reflects their nature as dual-beings of both material and mystical essence.

Reproduction

Kitsune reproduce biologically, but conception is a spiritually significant event believed to require soul harmony between the parents. Many clans perform rituals during mating seasons to “attune” their spirits, increasing fertility and ensuring the spiritual purity of the unborn.

  • Pairing: Monogamy is common, but spiritual unions can form without romantic ties. Kitsune regard soul compatibility over physical attraction.
  • Crossbreeding: Rare but possible with humans, elves, and other fae-touched beings. However, the resulting offspring often only manifest partial Kitsune traits (such as a single tail or dormant magic).

Gestation and Childbirth

Gestation Period: Approximately 9.5 to 10.5 lunar cycles (~10 human months), slightly longer than humans due to the spiritual gestation that occurs alongside physical development.

Prenatal Phenomena:

  • The fetus forms an aura-tail in the womb—an ethereal representation of the Kitsune’s latent flame. This aura-tail, shortly after birth, solidifies into the kitsune's first tail. Dreams often become vivid for the expecting mother, sometimes shared with the unborn through the Dreaming Veil, the process being seen as the mother often helping to guide and prepare the spirit of the unborn child.

Kitsune childbirth is both ritual and ordeal. Midwives are often spirit-weavers, tasked with safeguarding the infant’s soul during delivery. The mother is surrounded by embers or sacred foxfire, symbols of ancestral protection. The first breath is guided by a chant known as the “Whisper of the First Flame”, believed to draw the child’s soul into the body fully.

Stages of Life

  1. Kitsune Pup (0–12 years)
    • Physically similar to humanoid children with soft fur patches, pointed ears, and a single tail.
    • Early years are highly sensory—they often mimic voices and illusions unconsciously, with clarity of these mimicries being tied to the latent talent of the child.
    • Kitsune children are prone to lucid dreaming, and some speak with spirits before they speak with adults.
  2. Flamechild (Adolescence, 13–30 years)
    • This is a volatile time where their second tail grows into form, with a rite of passage to herald the child into their burgeoning self-hood. It burns with spiritual essence when under emotional stress.
    • Many undergo a rite called the First Dream Walk, where they face a trial within the Dreaming Veil to meet their families ancestors, and learn the kind of person that they wish to be.
    • Emotional control and magical refinement are taught intensely at this stage. In addition, schooling and education in preparation for full adulthood is strongly emphasized at this stage in life.
    • As they reach proper adulthood, their third tail grows in, signaling the change from child to adult.
  3. Foxshade (Adulthood, 31–180 years)
    • The prime of Kitsune life: physical, magical, and mental faculties are all at their height.
    • Kitsune may begin earning new tails through exceptional deeds, mastery of spirit magic, or enlightenment ahead of the typical 50 years of life normally needed for each tail.
    • Social roles solidify: warriors, lorekeepers, veilwalkers, spirit diplomats, and hearthwardens.
  4. Moonblood (Elderhood, 180–300+ years)
    • Kitsune who reach this stage of life are seen as wizened, experienced, or exceptionally talented, earning the title of 'Moonblood' upon attaining their sixth tail.
    • Magic becomes more innate and effortless, but the physical body weakens gradually as their reach their truly elder years (330+) after attaining their ninth tail. This process can be slowed with care and effort, magic and spirituality, but can never be stopped.
  5. Veil-Return (Death and Rebirth)
    • Death is not feared—it is a return to the Veil. Kitsune believe they are reborn as spirit-foxes, serving as guiding flames to guide the living to their ancestors in dreams when help is needed.

Lifespan and Influencing Factors

  • Average Lifespan: 350 to 500 years for most Kitsune, being the natural lifespan without extensions.
  • Nine-Tails: May live 500+ years, if sustained by various means, with recorded lifespans reaching to 1000 years.
  • Spiritual Death: Occurs if the soul is severed violently from the body (via soul magic or cursed weapons), for the soul cannot survive without the body, nor the reverse.

Factors That Impact Longevity:

  • Soul Burn: Kitsune who draw too deeply from their flame may burn themselves out, causing physical issues. Overusing this power without proper rest can lead to a state of burnout, a physical and magical exhaustion that can be debilitating and even fatal.

Other Notes

  • Stillbirths or soulless births are rare and tragic, believed to occur when the Dreaming Veil fails to find a spirit. Such births are mourned with soft lanterns placed in rivers.
  • Reincarnation beliefs: Some believe particularly strong Kitsune are reborn across generations to complete a grand task from their first life, and can be reborn again, though sometimes far removed from their previous, making such tasks difficult, if not impossible.
  • Kitsune twins are viewed as special omens — often signaling a period of great change or strife in Kitsune culture. Efforts are made to treat such pairs as normally as possible, in hopes that such omens are of a positive light, fearing that emphasis on their special-ness could result in greater damage to Kitsune culture as a whole.

Habitat and Population

Required. What environments does this species live in? How many of this species are there? You can say something like 'common throughout the sector', 'rare outside of their home system', etc if you don't want to use numbers.

Diet

The Kitsune believe that food is sacred energy, a gift from the land and the spirits. Their meals are as much spiritual practice as nourishment, crafted to maintain balance between body, flame, and soul. Kitsune are omnivorous, but with strong cultural and ritual leanings. Kitsune food emphasizes balance—raw and cooked, meat and fruit, spicy and subtle. Certain foods are avoided or only consumed during seasonal festivals or spiritual rites.

Kitsune never eat alone, unless mourning or in deep contemplation. Communal meals are sacred.

    • “When we hunt, it is with purpose. We eat, we remember, we honor.” — Kitsune proverb.
  • Primary Food Sources
    • 🥩 Meats (Instinctual) - Kitsune are foxlike in origin, and many retain carnivorous instincts, though they temper these with spiritual respect for the life taken.
      • Small game: rabbit, pheasant, wild birds, forest boar.
      • Fish: river trout, flame-scaled eels, dreamfin (a magical fish that glows faintly).
      • Ritual meat: Kitsune will only eat red meat during sacred moon feasts or following a successful hunt, often preparing it with fire magic and song.

      • Soulmoss: a luminous herb brewed into tea to induce calm or visions.
      • Flame thyme and dusk pepper: enhance magical sensitivity when cooked correctly.
    • 🍓 Fruits and Sweets (Revered as Gifts)
      • Kitsune revere fruit-bearing trees, believing them to be under the protection of forest spirits.
      • Bloodplums, moonberries, firepears—fruit often fermented into wine or offered to guests.
      • Honeycomb and sweet sap are used sparingly, considered offerings from nature herself.
      • Kitsune sweets include rice cakes wrapped in moon-leaves, candied foxapple, or spicy fruit pastes.

Ritual & Social Eating

Communal meals are sacred. Kitsune do not eat alone unless in mourning or deep contemplation. Meals often start with incense and a spoken thanks to the Flame and Veil. Guests are honored with small, intricate dishes meant to invoke memory or emotion—Kitsune chefs are storytellers in their own right.

Unique Cultural Practices

  • Moonfeasts: Held during full moons, these meals include fire-roasted game, fermented moonfruit wine, and dreamcap stew.
  • Kitsune fasting: Practiced by mages and spiritualists to heighten connection with the Dreaming Veil—only herbal tea and dried fruit are consumed during these periods.
  • Tail Trials (rites of passage): A dish must be hunted, prepared, and served by the aspiring Kitsune alone, often made from rare or dangerous ingredients.

What Kitsune Avoid

  • Artificially processed foods or “dead” meals without soul or effort. They believe such things dull the spirit.
  • Cold iron cookware: Said to disrupt magical energies. They favor clay, stone, or enchanted bronze.

Biological Variation

The Kitsune of Ama'Tsuin are not a single monolithic race, but a diverse people shaped by environment, ancestry, and spiritual affinity. While they share a common origin in the Dreaming Veil and a connection to the soul-flame known as the Hikaru, their physiology, fur colors, abilities, and even instincts vary greatly depending on where and how they evolved.

Forest Born Kitsune

Veranti, typically have tawny skin with fur colors ranging from red to black with speckles of white. They have a heightened affinity for illusion magic and are often seen as some of the best tempered of the clans. They also have the distinction of having longer whiskers than the other clans. Physical build is dependent on the various forested regions. Verdanti, are typically the most varied of the clans, having the widest ranges and the most recorded customs, per sheer volume of persons.

Arctic Born Kitsune

Arcturus, have ivory skinned they are often seen as some of the more beautiful of the species. Their fur color ranges from several shades of white, during winter, and shades of brown and black during the summer months. They are also the most vain of the clans, truly the peacocks of Ama'Tsuin, though they tend to me more reclusive during the summer, as their illustrious white winter coats have shed. Aside from vanity they are known for speaking with wind spirits. When a Arcturus lies, their breath freezes, which makes them brutally honest or evasive. They are also the most hardy, surviving the long winters has given them the adaptation for greater fat storage for lean months.

Plains Born Kitsune

Nomatia, or nomads as their more commonly referred to by their kin. They are characterized with their russet skin, dark eyes, and sandy brown fur. Their limbs are typically much longer, allowing for greater running speeds than their cousins, capable of extreme long distance sprints with minimal fatigue. They have the ability to emit whistling cries that can stun or disorient those in close proximity. Their seen as some of the most spiritual among the clans, though their spirituality does not hinder their love of running. In fact it is seen as their sacred right, and Nomatia who cannot run, feel the wind in their fur, quickly spiral into depression or even madness as they believe their connection to the earth and the Dreaming Veil is of the same consequence. To keep a Nomatia, from their freedom is to kill their soul.

Water Born Kitsune

Caspians, are the second most numerous species behind the Veranti. They are varied some having opalescent skin while others are olive tan, pearlescant tails that range from white to seafoam blue. Their eyes typically hail from the blue spectrum, also possessing rare tones such as purple (This comes from the fish they consume). Their fur has become sleek and water repellant, losing their bushy appearance to become more ribbon-like. Mainly pescatarians, the Caspians live in coastal waterways and sometimes marshlands. Having evolved sickle like black retractable claws, and rudimentary gills under their jawline for extended diving sessions, though they are not truly semi-aquatic. They are rarely seen, being the most reclusive of the clans.

Rabenite Kitsune

Cultural Name, are considered the more 'estranged' branch of Kitsune, due to the origin of this particular group, and the effects this origin has had on it's generations, resulting in a different kind of Kitsune than your typical fare.

Motivation and Emotion

Required. What drives individuals in this species? What are their emotions like? Feel free to compare them to humans, since we're familiar with that. No need to explain what happy or sad is - just talk about what is specific to this species.

Sexuality and Love

Kitsune don’t view love as merely physical or transactional — it’s a spiritual resonance, a spark of recognition between dreams. This is because finding another in the Dreaming Veil can be difficult, with the inherent 'fuzziness' of it that finding one you recognize purely from it is seen as being of great import to an individual, such that dreams of that nature are often called Spirit Bridges, guiding one to those they are meant to be close to.

“Love is the fire that does not burn the tail, but warms the soul.” – Kitsune proverb

Forms of Love in Kitsune Culture

Kitsune recognize multiple distinct types of love, each with cultural importance:

  • Kano – Passionate Affection - Romantic and/or sexual love. Seen as intoxicating, wild, and sacred. Intense Kano bonds can amplify a Kitsune’s magic or cause their illusions to become more vivid, due to the rising clarity of their connection. Kano pairs are known, at times, to be able to perform feats of magic or dream walking that can twist the known laws of reality from the strength of their connection.
  • Sairen – Soul Alignment - Deep, platonic or spiritual bond. Can exist between friends, companions, or mentor and student. Some lifelong pairs never become romantic or sexual but are revered for their unwavering trust in each other. Ones who break such a bond are often viewed harshly, rarely to be worth connecting to again.
  • Yuren’kai – Ancestral or Dream-Memory Love - Occurs when two Kitsune feel they’ve known each other across past lives. These connections are rare and often treated with reverence, though not always romantic.

Kitsune view relationships very openly. They expect one to explore, experiment, and test themselves in a variety of ways and manners, to learn for themselves what they seek physically in a partner, beyond the deep connection they might feel in the soul. This isn't to say that they might have different preferences than what their Kano provides, but it's not view negatively to be 'free-spirited' until one does chose a Kano. While many Kitsune fall into monogamous pairings, this is not hard coded as some Kano pairs are still free-spirited. These pairs are viewed somewhat dimly, as it feels improper to 'share' one's power after finding the one to amplify it, but it's not treated negatively or harshly.

Heartbreak and Loss

When Kitsune suffer heartbreak or abandonment, the follow may occur:

  • Their foxfire dims or flares — physically and magically, as they cannot pour power in as controlled a manner.
  • Dreams become erratic, volatile. There is little safety to be had in a realm where the self is raw and exposed.
  • Some channel grief into art, illusion, or combat, becoming emotionally volatile but incredibly powerful.

Other Romantic Customs

  • Foxfire Dances: An elaborate courtship ritual performed during festivals under moonlight — partners mirror each other's illusions.
  • Tail Ribbons: A Kitsune will offer a silk ribbon tied to their tail to someone they wish to court. When a pair of kitsune marry, the one who received the ribbon will 'return' the ribbon to the gifter, often tying it onto the tail once more to signify the closing of the circle of courtship. Being gifted a ribbon is seen as a mark of affection, admiration and commitment to the pairing, as such ribbons are often specially crafted for such courtships.

Core Belief

  • Dreams as Sacred Pathways: Dreams are not just the mind’s wanderings but actual journeys into the spirit realm — a world layered atop the waking world, where kami (spirits) dwell, and the raw, unfiltered nature of things is revealed.
  • Spirits of Dreams: There are kami specifically tied to dreams — some are guardians, some are tricksters, some deliver messages or omens.
  • Ancestral Connection: Ancestors visit the living through dreams, offering guidance or warnings.

—

Shrines & Sacred Spaces

  • Dream Shrines: Small shrines near bedrooms or special dream temples where people pray before sleep, asking for clear visions or protection from nightmares.
  • Sacred Pillows & Talismans: People might use blessed pillows, dreamcatchers, or charms that encourage good dreams or ward off malicious spirits.

—

Rituals

  • Pre-Sleep Offerings: Offer rice, sake, incense, or water at the dream shrine before bed to invite benevolent spirits.
  • Dream Sharing Ceremonies: Upon waking, people share significant dreams with a priestess or shaman who interprets them and helps align the dreamer’s waking life with the messages.
  • Rites for Nightmares: Exorcisms or cleansing rituals for persistent nightmares thought to be caused by malevolent spirits.

—

Priesthood & Roles

  • Yume-no-Miko/Yume-no-Mikoto: Special clergy trained to enter lucid dreams, perform spirit journeys, and interpret dreams for the community.
  • Yumetsukai: Some particularly gifted individuals act as living bridges — their dreams are prophetic or communal, sometimes dreaming on behalf of the whole village, and are often highly practiced in how to act upon the Dream Veil through magic, often making protective wards for others and being negotiators with dreams spirits on the behalf of others.

—

Festivals

  • Festival of the Sleeping Moon: On the first new moon of a year, there is a communal gathering, often a party, where many normally looked down upon acts are allowed, so long as they are safe, as a means to help 'wake' the moon for the new year. It is believed the excessive noise and activity of those during the night help to ensure that terrible dreams fail to gain a foothold in the year.
  • Night Vigil: A act to remain awake and vigilant during the night to ensure that the safety of the family is secured when a kitsune leaves their home as a child for the last time, to now find their place as an adult.

—

Doctrine

  • Fluid and Oral: Dreams can take many forms, and thusly, no two regions treat them the same, as the local conditions, the people, and the tales of the land can all result in very different patterns and acts to protect the community.
  • Living Mythology: Spirits change form; dreams are seen as ever-shifting revelations of the divine.
  • Morality: A good life is one where your waking deeds do not pollute your spirit, allowing your dreams to remain clear and true.

—

Symbols

  • Sacred Flowers: Blooming only at night — symbols of the fleeting beauty of dreams.
  • Animals: Foxes, owls, moths — creatures of the night who act as messengers between the waking and dreaming worlds.
  • Dream Masks: Used in rituals to help dreamers ‘travel’ safely into the other realm.

—

How It Shapes Society

  • Dreams as Guidance: Major decisions (marriage, planting crops, starting journeys) are often preceded by seeking a significant dream.
  • Dream Crimes: Spiritual wrongdoing — such as invading another’s dream maliciously — is taken as seriously as waking crimes.

Philosophy

Optional. If already covered in a Nation article, feel free to link and include a basic blurb here.
