Work In Progress

Purgatory is a shard where far more shards than usual connect. Passage to Purgatory is easy, but exiting is hard. Oftentimes, people who are lost or searching new frontiers wind up here, carried by strange anomalies. In Purgatory, the laws of the shard are plastic and elastic. Conflicting and mutually exclusive technologies and powers can exist together. Inevitably, this leads to constant, unrestricted warfare between alien civilisations visiting and vying for domination of the shard. The only overriding truth is that sensory technology or similar abilities are greatly hindered, resulting in everyone being restricted to eyesight and vague EM readings alone.

The natives of Purgatory are a fallen Precursor civilisation, driven to hide from the wars in the heavens in disparate underground communities. Fearful of their advanced technology's energy outputs still flagging on visitor's sensors despite the shard's conditions, much of their technology is locked away and forgotten about. Instead, reverse engineered low-energy technologies are used. In practice, this can range anywhere from medieval to post-WW2, but universally very little electronics are used. These survivors follow a Creed to help them persist in such hostile conditions, and they yearn one day to improve their situation.

History

The Survivor States is the name given to the scattered civilisations upon Purgatory, which is also the name for the shard. What was once a thriving Precursor world was set upon by their undead metallic foes. A corporation sold a rushed and undertested defense device to the world's government. When they activated it, it blinded the sensors of all who enter the shard, but also somehow made the shard's parameters elastic and uncertain. As a consequence, connections between this shard and others open up constantly, and somehow all but the visitor's sensors work perfectly. With the throughput, battles rage in the heavens around the planet and often descend onto the surface.

The original Precursors retreated underground for safety, abandoning much of the already-desolated surface world. While sensors were heavily affected, the energy signatures of their advanced technology still seemed to draw visitors to their users, which ultimately caused many casualties. These Precursors swore off using these devices for fear of bringing the gods in the skies down onto their heads. There, underground, they devolved biologically, technologically and societally. While some need to come up to the surface for hunting, farming and salvage, the majority only exit their underground communities once every week or so.

With communications technology locked away, great civilisations and cities became countless small communities. Over the years, certain potent ideas somehow spread across these disparate cells. One of them was the Survivor's Creed, a set of rules by which to live to best ensure survival. While the cells have vastly varying government structures, this caused many to adopt a theocratic system, where the person who best personifies the Survivor's Creed has seniority in a community.
