History

Nergal Station is an experiment to broach a new market. Astroid mining and planet harvesting is all well and good, but the galaxy around us is filled with dust and debris. So Nergal Station was built to draw in the floating hulks of vessels, and all the micrometals in the dust around us.

Description

A bulky and seemingly jury-rigged station, repairs and expansions have ruined the sleak and stylish core of the thing to make it look like a giant collection of scrap and junk held together with spit and duct tape. The insides are no better, as crude and patched as anything. It's location, apart from any ruling planet, leads it to be perfect picking for pirate raiders, and constant duels with small ships are held by the large, repurposed Tractor Beams and massive electromagnets that are used to draw in the dust and debris of the galaxy. Larger pirate swarms get through to land on the station itself, either constantly fighting the denizens or settling into a sort of co-existance with them.

Add in a semi-frequent stream of merchants and Bounty Hunters to drag the pirates away to a payday, and Nergal is quite an active place. The denizens - pale as snow with bright blue eyes that can be cast in a startling red hue in some lightings - are often avoided by off-worlders because their unnatural appearance is off-putting. A completely alien form is fine for the brain, but a clearly human form in such stark colours tickles the back of the primal mind. The fact that they are often seen drinking vitamin supplements in the form of blood doesn't help matters at all.

Plot Hooks and Rumors

Occasionally the lights go out in parts of the station. So black that even night-vision doesn't work, the denizens have no trouble getting around since their eyesight is pretty poor to begin with and less relied upon. This does lead to terrifying horror situations where scuttling in the dark causes extreme reactions.

Wandering off without some kind of thermals is ill advised, since the station heating can decide to just give up at any point. With no natural source of heat, the area rapidly cools to sub-zero. Special “Bolt-Holes” are built into the station that denizens trapped there can retreat into and keep a semblance of warmth until it is fixed, but visitors rarely know where these are and tend to panic when caught out in the open.

Getting mugged or assaulted is practically a guarantee for off-worlders, so make sure to bring a gun, or several large people with guns. Rolling firefights are rarer but much more dangerous to get caught in.

Places of Interest

The massive station has a lot of places to explore for the adventurous. The hydroponics, the power grid, the residential area, the Shipbreaker yard, the Foundries and the academic area are all great places to have a gander at. A few bars even exist to cater to the pirates and unscrupulous merchants that meet them. Hallway deals are frowned upon for the sake of security, so the bars are pretty explicitly places to meet your underworld contacts. Brawls are frequent.
