Hybora
Magic roils and washes out from Hybora's central star, bathing the Hybora System and space around it for light years. Aetheric energy is so present that it affects life and travel within the affected area, known as “the Hyboran Expanse”, to such an extent that it seems to no longer follow the normal rules of the universe.
Magical creatures form out of the aether-stuff with great regularity. Interplanetary travel has to deal with aetheric ebbs and flows throwing ships off course. Even the sentient natives of the Expanse likely owe their sentience to this potent magical force.
At the center of it all is Hybora, the star. According to Hyboran legend, a great serpent lives within the star and is the source of all magic within the Expanse.

History
The native Hyboreans, originating from the planet Hyborea, have long taken advantage of the system's magick and magickal creatures. Early in their civilization, they discovered how to harness magic to grant them passage into space. Not long after, they began to create colonies and settlements all across the Expanse. Most such settlements are little more than homes and craft shops that depend on a magical bubble to protect them and provide them with atmosphere. Trade with other settlements covers whatever other needs they might have.
Today, nearly any planetary body large enough to support a settlement has one. The largest and most impressive of these settlements is the Argent Ring, which fully encircles the Hyborean homeworld.
Description
Geographically, Hybora is much like most star systems. It has a central star, eleven planets of the usual size and formations, and a rocky ring around its midpoint. It is the way that the all-present magic of the system affects that geography that makes it notable.
First, and most importantly, is that the system's magic is thick enough that it is perceivable to the naked eye. A ship in space might perceive this magic as though it were coasting through a nebula, but the glittery, incandescent material that catches the system's magical currents are actually condensed granules of magic. These granules are finer than sand and sparsely distributed, but they catch and reflect light in such a way that they give the appearance of waves on the ocean. This is commonly called the “sea of aether” by the Expanse's residents.
These granules coalesce the most in those places where gravity draws them in. Accordingly, planets, moons, and asteroids are the most magickally affected. Here, creatures born of and made out of magic arise naturally. The forms and abilities of these creatures are consistent enough that they have been given names by the sentient natives of the system. They hunt the other creatures of the Expanse and are, in turn, hunted themselves by more dangerous creatures.

Plot Hooks and Rumors
Adventure abounds in the Hyboran Expanse for those brave enough to seek it.
- Pirates have captured a mayor's daughter. She's being held within the pirate's base at an asteroid cove a few days away. A reward has been posted.
- Magical creatures are in high demand for hunters who are willing to risk the work. The bigger the creature, the better the pay out.
- A ship carrying a fortune's worth of gold and enchanted items has been lost within Niramasca's dense, gasious atmosphere. Rumor says that the ship hasn't sunk too deep to be recovered, but all who have gone after the treasure have been lost.
- The trade lanes between Hyborea and Arcalor have long been harangued by a massive, octopus-like creature that seems to only show itself right before it attacks. Anyone able to take it down will earn a sizeable reward - and the appreciation of the merchants who travel those lanes.
