Excerpt from W.R.A.I.T.H report files
…When the Iron Company first appeared within our borders, it was not the typical contact of a merchant vessel or exploratory craft-or even a planet, but a heavily armed and armored patrol craft accidentally intercepting one of our frigates along the boundaries of the Scarlet Maze. This very nearly ended in disaster as without warning the vessels nearly collided with one another. This almost resulted in an exchange of fire between the two, though cooler heads barely managed to prevail. A tense exchange later, and the group eventually identified themselves as the Iron Company, a foreign mercenary unit that had recently entered the area. Negotiations were extremely tense to say the least, but eventually a deal was struck-the company would be able to continue to conduct operations in exchange in the event of war they must provide assistance. This clearly struck a nerve of sorts-but reluctantly agreed to provide limited support in the form of a small flotilla of patrol craft to assist in anti-pirate operations to keep supply lines open.. Since then, the Company has conducted limited operations, mostly operating in the Andrestate region of space through a medium sized space station, occasionally selling weapons and equipment to the Duskarian Nobility on the outer colonies…
The Iron Company was a mercenary faction that operated for close to a century in another universe before internal strife finally broke them apart, and was reformed nearly 50 years later by their sole surviving member. Their symbol was at the time a red and white shield with a gold cross on it, though the new one is a black shield with a single white star in the middle.
Their standard uniform and equipment colors are Dark blue and gray, though maybe recolored according to mission parameters, though individuals known as sentinels had dark green and gray, and usually, a personalized coat of arms, while officers usually had a gold or silver trim to their armor and uniforms. Their leader is a one Albert Steiner, and has done his best to hold them together through the last decade or so of its tumultuous exsistance
Information on the original company is sketchy at best, with most of it coming from its sole survivng member from the old days and even then getting the information out of them is like squeezing water like a rock-though it was later found that his information was as sketchy as records about their early days were hard to come by. From what is known, they operated initially under the name Gaben's Hunters-a group of human who had struck out for what was the frontier at the time seeking their fortune. At what point they went from a simple band of mercenaries hunting whatever ugly critters that decided that your face would make a tasty snack to the bright, shiny knightly order was unclear, but for almost eighty years they operated under the new name “The Iron Company”, taking various contracts escorting trade vessels, continuing their old profession of hunting taking the carcasses as payment, and stamping out whatever pirates and warlords they happened upon with great gusto mixed in with a little manufacturing on the side. This gave them a reputation for being one of the groups of go-to guys for killing whatever space bugs you happened across, or when you need to tell those pesky pirates with a very firm, resounding voice “Hippity Hoppity, hands off my property!” and had the big guns to back it up as well as being handy if you needed something fixed. The Company, even in its current, sad lonely state was always fond of weapons that were powerful, heavy, hard-hitting, or volatile or some combination thereof.
It could simply be a case of it grew out of the fact that they had been and still were a group of hunters tracking down dangerous creatures that often needed extreme firepower to deal with, and they decided to apply that to making whatever the hell was in front of them die. Maybe it was a compensation measure-hard to say. Minus a few details aside from being popular with the little guy, what is known is that some kind of internal strife did them in that Steiner calls the “Schism”, and is unwilling to say anything else.
Shortly after arriving back in his home galaxy, Steiner gathered a number of a scattered individuals, idealists, craftsmen, and a series of techno-barbarian tribes from the Eradani cluster. Through diplomacy and warfare, these individuals have found their way to this universe, though for good or for ill is yet to be decided. It should be noted that many members of the company are extremely anti-magical, causing spells and enchantments to fail around them and fouling magitech equipment and are often known to create dead magic zones if enough of them are together. However, a few posses the rare and terrifying ability to wield it, however this is as much a curse as a boon, as the magic they wield is terrible and hungry.
