Getting Started
Like writing with other people? You're in the right place.
Getting started is simple. Most of our rules are anything but complicated - be nice to others, don't cause problems, and have a good time pretty much sum them up - and our setting is wide enough that you're likely to find something you're interested in. If you can't find something, why not make it?
What do I need to know?
First - that our setting is broadly a space opera, but that it contains pockets that can be whatever they want to be. One world can be purely fantasy, another purely science fiction. If you don't see something you like and you have the motivation to make it yourself - you can do that, too.
Depending on what you want to do here, there are different parts of our rules that might be relevant. Our primary goals are to make sure that everyone feels safe and that everyone has a good time - the rules we have are in service of that.
Our rules aren't meant to be exhaustive, but we try to cover the important parts in a way that is easy to understand. If you're not sure of something, ask!
I just want to roleplay with other players
If all you want to do is start writing, you don't have much further to go.
If you're not familiar with forum roleplay, check out our primer.
All of our players are expected to behave in a way that's beneficial to our community and the stories we tell. In short, we expect that:
- Everyone understands that Project Multiverse is meant for people ages 18 and up. You may encounter things that would be inappropriate for younger people.
- That we treat each other with respect, wherever we interact.
- That we respect the intellectual property of others, even those who aren't part of our community.
- That we act in a way that is fair to other players.
- That we are thoughtful about our contributions to the setting.
If you want to know more or feel that something is unclear, you can read more in our Core Rules.
If you feel good about all of the above, head to Discord and post in the #looking-for-rp channel.
I want to make my own stories and have other players participate in them
I want to develop my own part of the setting
I'm In!
If you like what you've seen, head over to our Discord Server and introduce yourself. Most of our story planning and worldbuilding happen there. Yes, there's memes.
After that, sign up on our forums. If you look and see a thread with the 'All Are Welcome' tag, you can start writing immediately if you've got a character concept that fits. All the other threads are invite-only, but that's why you joined the Discord server! You can post your interest in the #looking-for-rp channel if you haven't found something already.
We foster a welcoming community. Players are encouraged to ask questions and come up with new ideas. We're glad to have you!
Joining Plots and Creating Characters
Most writing takes place in plots, which are stories helmed by a Game Master - “GM”, for short - who guides the plot and handles the general administration of keeping things moving. The best way to find a plot to join is to hop into our Discord Server, introduce yourself, and let people know you want to play. A channel exists to make this easier (“ #looking-for-rp ”), but new players can feel free to start off in #general.
A list of plots that have chosen to make wiki pages to stay organized can be found on the Plots page, but it's optional for GMs and less up-to-date than Discord.
Once you've found a plot and talked to its GM about how you might fit in, head over to Characters and use our character creation form to make your first character. Don't feel like it has to be perfect - you can make changes later!
Stories take place within 'Shards' that might have their own unique settings, rules, and other details that could impact your character and their future, so ask around or read up to learn more about the world your character will live in.
