====== Getting Started ======

Like writing with other people? You're in the right place.

We want it to be easy for you to start writing with us. Our rules are broken up so that you only need to learn the parts that are relevant to you. As you spend more time with us and want to try more things, you can learn the relevant rules as you go.
===== What do I need to know? =====

First - that our setting is broadly a space opera, but that it contains pockets that can be whatever they want to be. One world can be purely fantasy, another purely science fiction. If you don't see something you like and you have the motivation to make it yourself - you can do that, too.

We want to make sure that everyone feels safe and that everyone has a good time - the rules we have are in service of that. Depending on what you want to do here, there are different parts of our rules that might be relevant. We've broken the rules and other relevant info into categories below.

If you're not sure of something, ask!

===== Players =====

If all you want to do is start writing, you don't have much further to go.

If you're not familiar with forum roleplay, check out our [[:primer]].

All of our players are expected to behave in a way that's beneficial to our community and the stories we tell. In short, we expect that:

  * Everyone understands that Project Multiverse is meant for people ages 18 and up. You may encounter things that would be inappropriate for younger people.
  * That we treat each other with respect, wherever we interact.
  * That we respect the intellectual property of others, even those who aren't part of our community.
  * That we act in a way that is fair to other players.
  * That we are thoughtful about our contributions to the setting.

===== Game Masters =====

If you want to be a [[:primer#the_game_master|Game Master]], we recommend that you participate in a plot for at least a month to get a feel for how they run. If you've done that or feel confident that you know what you're getting onto, then continue on!

GMs should know about..

  * All the things that are expected of players (they are one, after all)
  * What a [[:primer#the_game_master|Game Master]] is
  * What a [[:plots|plot]] is
  * What's involved in planning out a story in the relevant part of the setting
  * How to get players involved in their story and keep them that way

That might seem like a lot, but for the most part we encourage all players to start up stories with other players as soon as they feel like they're ready. If you're unsure of what to do, ask!

You don't need Staff approval to become a GM or start telling stories, but you should talk to the manager of whatever [[:shards|Shard]] you want to tell stories in first. After that, talk to other players about your idea and see if there's interest!
===== Shard Masters =====

As with GMs, we recommend that you've been part of a plot and/or shard for at least a month before trying to create your own part of the setting - what we call shards. If you've done that, or feel confident that you're ready anyways, continue on!

Shard Masters should know about...

  * All the things that are expected of players (they are one, after all)
  * All the things that are expected of GMs (they are one of these, too)
  * What a [[:shards|shard]] is
  * What goes into making an interesting, compelling Shard
  * How to get players motivated to be a part of their Shard and keep them that way

Creating and managing a shard comes with more responsibilities than most players will have to worry about. As with the stories that a GM wants to tell, no one on PM is forced to be part of a Shard - it's on you, the potential Shard Master, to create something that people want to be part of.

Any new Shard should be discussed with Staff first. We'll make sure that there isn't too much overlap with what someone else is doing and generally try to help you get your idea off the ground.
===== I'm In! =====

If you like what you've seen, head over to our [[https://discord.gg/vj6TXWvgFj|Discord Server]] and introduce yourself. Most of our story planning and worldbuilding happen there. Yes, there's memes.

After that, sign up on our [[https://projectmultiverse.net/|forums]]. If you look and see a thread with the 'All Are Welcome' tag, you can start writing immediately if you've got a character concept that fits. All the other threads are invite-only, but that's why you joined the Discord server! You can post your interest in the **#looking-for-rp** channel if you haven't found something already.

We foster a welcoming community. Players are encouraged to ask questions and come up with new ideas. We're glad to have you!
