Work In Progress

The Wyr of the Wyrwycky are a female-led species of human-like warriors. The majority of their females become War Witches and fight the unending Droma hoard that threatens their species' existence.

History

The Wyr were once a major force in their corner of the sector. Where other empires wielded massive fleets with devastating weaponry, the Wyr relied on war witches, women who could wield the Wyrd through arcane-powered implements called Cauldrons. Despite their lack of massive vessels of war, the Wyr nonetheless held their own.

Their future seemed bright as witches continued to return victorious from battle after battle. Legends were born and their territories expanded to claim nearby stars as their own.

All of this changed when the Wyr stumbled upon the Droma. Their victories soon turned to defeats as the alien creatures pursued them across the stars. Ultimately, even their homeworld was taken by the alien menace.

Only the Wyrdwood Moon, orbiting their lost homeworld and final bastion of the Wyr, has remained in their possession. Keeping their new home costs them dozens of lives each month, lives that are difficult to replace, but the Wyr's indomitable spirit will keep them fighting until the last witch falls.

Habitat and Population

Beyond the Wyrwood Moon, Wyr are a rare sight in the sector. The demands of their unending battle rarely allows battle-capable witches to leave the frontlines. Wyr live their lives in settlements remnant of what a fantasy wood elf city would look like, if it they advanced technology and witches flying around all the time.

Biology

Wyr are similar to humans in most ways. Their life cycle, appearance, and body structure are all like those of a human, suggesting a common ancestor. Their genetics are sufficiently divergent to consider them a separate species.

The Wyr show a degree of sexual dimorphism beyond that of their human origin.

Females tend to be on the smaller side of human average, with thin frames and minimal curves. Their connection to the Wyrd means that their small forms matter little; through their Cauldrons they can out-tough their male counterparts with ease.

Males are considerably larger than human average and tend to be thickly muscled. Despite Wyr males' physical capabilities, their inability to wield the Wyrd has caused them to focus mostly on construction and craftsmanship.

Anatomy and Physiology

Outside of their dymorphism, Wyr anatomy is similar to humans in all ways that matter. Whatever allows female Wyr to draw upon the Wyrd does not seem to be related to their anatomy.

Life Cycle

Wyr age and develop in ways similar to humans until their teenage years.

During this time, male Wyr quickly begin to gain in height and muscle mass, often growing half a foot or more. Regardless of exercise, most males have a physique that looks like a professional weightlifter or professional athlete. Male Wyr can live well into their early hundreds.

Female Wyr see their development slowing as their connection to the life-sapping Wyrd begins to grow. Their age, especially those who become War Witches, seems to be frozen as they reach early adulthood. Females rarely live beyond their fiftieth year, with those who heavily rely upon the Wyrd living even shorter lives.

Diet

Wyr eat foods that are familiar and compatible to humans, though they may prepare it in ways that are unique to their culture.

Biological Variation

Wyr hair and eye color range from standard human colors, to brilliant gem-like colors, to silvers and golds. All human skin color options are sufficiently common within Wyr society as to not be noteworthy.

Height commonly varies by up to half a foot in either direction from the average. Wyr who are shorter or taller than that are much less common, but still exist.

Psychology

Wyr think in ways that are familiar to humans. They are heavily duty-bound to care for and protect their people, a burden that they all face head on. Centuries of carefully-managed resources have caused them to be sparing and careful of waste, though they enjoy niceties.

Motivation and Emotion

Wyr try to live their lives to the fullest, especially as many of them know that they won't live a long life. They are not immune to the stress of this knowledge and tend to lean on close friends for support.

All Wyr try to not fear death, but they are not immune to the fear. They do not throw their lives away pointlessly, knowing that if they can live for tomorrow's battle, that is what their people need.

This isn't to say that Wyr are dreary - they can be cheery, boisterous, romantic, and more. They live like firecrackers, bright and beautiful all the way up until their grand finale.

Sexuality and Love

Love can be fleeting or long-lasting among the Wyr and tends to ignore the bounds of gender. The two genders lead such different lives that, for many, it can be difficult to relate to one another.

Despite their differences, male-female pairs are still common. All Wyr know that their population is declining and highly value children.

Culture

Language

All Wyr speak Wyr after an effort was made to standardize their species' language nearly a thousand years ago. It is a pleasant, sometimes musical, language.

Feel free to use Gaelic influences/accents when writing with them, but don't feel compelled to go overboard. Some Wyr have thicker accents than others, but keep it readable!

Naming

Wyr names tend to be whimsical or fantasy-sounding, in contrast to their harsh lives. Classic witch or wizard names are excellent sources of inspiration. Celtic and/or Gaelic names are a classic source of witch-y names and are likewise appropriate here.

While Wyr grow up and identify with their family, they do not have the concept of surnames. A Wyr's given name is their only name.

Useful name inspirations/generators:

The Arts

As they are unable to participate in the Droma war, male Wyr take great pride in their craftsmanship as a way to contribute. Whether they are crafting new weapons of war or simple garments, Wyr do their best to make things that are long-lasting and beautifully made.

Attire

“A witch's hat is her pride, you know?”

Wyr wear clothes that blend the fantastical with the modern. As the Wyrd provides all the defenses a witch needs, there is little difference between the clothes they wear during the day and those they wear to battle. Wyr have no problems being elaborate or bombastic - everyone wants to leave their impression on those around them, so that they aren't forgotten one day.

Wide-brimmed witch hats with big skirts are common, as are long, robe-like coats. These are contrasted by gloves or boots that are clearly made of advanced materials. Lace, stars, over-sized accessories and accents, and so on all contribute to each witch having a look that is uniquely, sometimes impossibly, her own.

Witches often use the size of their hats as a sign of seniority. Witches with particularly large hats tend to hold more authority or be more powerful than other witches. Not all witches wear wide-brimmed hats, but the fashion trend is consistent enough to have its own set of compliments and insults.

“Get a load of her! You'd think her hat was three sizes larger, the way she's been acting lately.”

The Wyr were once a culture that spanned multiple planets. While their primary fashion inspirations are based around traditional western fantasy witches, clothes and mannerisms representing magic-wielders from other cultures are certainly possible.

Inspirations for how the Wyr look can be found in the Wyrwycky Mood Board.

Religion

Wyr are not religious, though they revere the Wyrd. An ephemeral power that only female members of their species can access, the Wyrd, and the devices that use it, have been the only thing preventing the outright annihilation of their species for hundreds of years.

Many Wyr pay respect to the great witches of old, such as First Witch Morrigan. These witches exemplified different respectable qualities, such as strength, wisdom, courage, and so forth. For Wyr who follow this practice, they often say a few words to an appropriate witch for dedication or guidance before undertaking an activity. To become a witch worthy of such recognition is the goal of many Wyr who want to leave a legacy larger than simply dying to hold the line.

Kinship

With short lives full of impending death, most Wyr either form tight bonds with friends and family, or swear off bonds entirely.

Conflict

The Droma War consumes the attention of all Wyr. They have no interest in starting new conflicts while they are already losing one war. That said, Wyr do not have unlimited patience for others and can at times come off as bristly. Should they be forced into a fight, they will fight with the intention of winning.
