Creating A Divian

This guide will walk you through creating a Gatalian who was raised in Divion. You do not have to follow it, but it contains useful information about the area and what everyday life is like there.

Species

Most Divians will be one of the species listed below. It would be possible for a Divian to be a species other than those listed, though they likely either moved to Divion recently, or their parents did before they were born.

Common

These human species are quite common in Divion, and make up the majority of the population in most areas.

Species Type? Nativity? Description
Geant Giant Naturalized On average 215 cm tall. Lanky with particularly flat teeth. Males and females are of similar strength and size.
Hiniru Miru Dwarf Naturalized On average 160 cm tall. Long legs, sharp teeth, and large eyes. Females tend to be hairier and more muscular.
Mundwere Giant Recently settled On average 177 cm tall. Mostly similar to modern Earth humans. Males are slightly more muscular, and often have facial hair.
Urzdwer Dwarf Native On average 122 cm tall. Short and stocky, with large feet and noses. Both males and females tend to have beards.

Exotic

These human species are much rarer in Divion, and often considered foreign by others. Regardless, they may still exist in small populations.

Species Type? Nativity? Description
Gygara Giant Foreign On average 237 cm tall, but the tallest can be as large as 280 cm! Bearded regardless of sex. They have pronounced brows and under bite.

Hybrids

You can also play as a hybrid between any of the above species. Hybrids are usually at least somewhat infertile, with dwarf-giant hybrids being almost always completely infertile. Hybrids often possess a mixture of traits inherited from each of their parent species. Some hybrids are known to manifest bizarre traits that neither parent possesses, such as Geangaras (Geant-Gygara hybrids) often being taller than both.

Birth complications are common and usually fatal when a dwarf bares the child of a giant. Contrarily, a giant baring the child of a dwarf tends to have less birth complications than they would from having mated with their own species.

Occupations

For examples of occupations not associated with any region, see Creating A Gatalian.

These are some occupations associated specifically with Divion.

Knight-errants

Knight-errants are a strange phenomenon in Divion. Gear such as swords and armour are often quite expensive, where as the errant lifestyle is low-income and highly nomadic. As a result, knight-errants are often disgraced nobles or peasants trained in combat since birth to bring glory and riches to their family name. It rarely works.

Witches

When someone calls another a “witch” in Divion, they mean to say that they are a member of a mystery cult of Yrtia. These cults are a good example of how religion and science become mixed on Gatalia. Yrtia is said to be a primordial deity, and the religion itself is monotheistic. Her followers worship the value of Truth, and are effectively covert alchemists that live as hermits deep in the woods. Despite their hermitude, they are almost always organised in covens which meet regularly. “Witch” is not associated with either gender, and a man is a witch just the same.

Religions

Your character is likely at least in some part religious. Their involvement with religions, however, is entirely up to you. Take a look at the religions listed here: Religions in Divion. Next, consider your character's relationship with each of these religions.

If you are unsure or cannot put in the effort, you could follow one of the below templates:

Common Halcanist

You came from a community of halcanists; followers of Halcanism. Halcanism is a faith from down south, and often associated with the Nimun culture. Your community taught you that balance is the key to personal and interpersonal peace.

You believe pluralistically in The Gilic Pantheon, but to you the almighty Halcan is above any other gods in the divine order.

Minaenism is alien and uncomfortable to you, and you have a strong negative association with the witches of Yrtianity.

Common Minaenist

Either through indoctrination or heritage, your community was dominantly minaenist. Minaenism is a faith from Perevion, the region to the North of Divion. Those who follow it believe that all beasts are supernatural, sacred spirits worthy of respect and equal treatment.

The existence of The Gilic Pantheon is obvious to you, and its gods are of higher status than beasts, but that does not make their worship any less important.

You understand Halcanism, although it is hard to sympathise with halcanists since they are often outright hostile towards your beliefs. You have a respect for Yrtianity, which does not always seem shared. Despite this, yrtian witches and minaenists can sometimes begrudgingly agree to disagree.

Names

You are free to come up with your own names, although it may be helpful to have some examples. You can also choose these examples for yourself. It should not be considered uncommon for people in the same region to have similar names to each other.

Epiethets

It is quite normal for people to be referred to by their origins, such as “Daughter of X”; “X's Husband”; “Y of Tarburg”, “Slave of X”, and so on. This naming scheme tends to orbit the most “valued” member of a family according to society. This is usually the parent of the species' sex which is on average taller or stronger. Examples:

If it is an orphan family, the “orbited” family member is often the eldest sibling.

In some cases people gain epithets based on local notoriety. Ex: “Greataxe of the Valley”, “Slugeater” or “Steelwind”. Sometimes these epithets are based on someone's exceptional skill, but usually they are less flattering. Someone known as “Slugeater” may have simply gained the name from their childhood, where they were infamous for being that one kid who ate slugs.
